With the festive season behind us, many of us may find our fridges raided by loved ones or are planning upcoming gatherings with friends and family. During this time, supermarket opening hours often change to celebrate the holiday season or to give staff some well-deserved time off. Like other days during the festive period, New Year's Day also brings changes to various supermarket opening and closing times.
It's advisable for shoppers to take note of the following opening times. However, keep in mind that store hours can vary depending on location, so it's always best to double-check with your local store. Here are the New Year's Day 2025 supermarket opening times for Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl and many more.

On Tuesday, December 31 (New Year's Eve), Asda stores will be open from 7am until 7pm, reports Wales Online . On Wednesday, January 1 (New Year's Day), stores will be open from 9am until 6pm, and then on Thursday, January 2, stores will resume normal opening hours. Aldi.
Aldi is maintaining its regular opening hours from 8am-10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am-4pm on Sunday for all your festive shopping needs, with a few exceptions. On Tuesday, December 31 (New Year's Eve), stores will be open between 8am and 6pm, while on Wednesday, January 1 (New Year's Day) all Aldi stores will be closed. Normal business hours will resume on Thursday, January 2.
You can find the most accurate opening times for your local store here. Lidl stores in Wales will be open from 8am-6pm on Tuesday, December 31 (New Year's Eve). They will then be closed on Wednesday, January 1 (New Year's Day) and open as usual on Thursday, January 2.
On Tuesday, December 31 (New Year's Eve), Sainsbury's supermarkets will be open from 10am to 7pm and convenience stores from 6am to 9pm. On Wednesday, January 1 (New Year's Day), supermarkets will be open from 8am to 8pm and convenience stores from 8am to 9pm. Petrol filling stations will open 30 minutes before and close 30 minutes after the main store, except on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve when they will open an hour later.
Sainsbury's advises customers to check their store locator for the latest details for their area. On New Year's Eve, Tuesday, December 31, Tesco's Extras and Superstores will shut their doors at 7pm. However, most Express stores will remain open until 10pm, with some larger Express stores also closing at 7pm.
On New Year's Day, Wednesday, January 1, Extras and Superstores in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be open from 8am and close by 6pm. The majority of Express stores will operate from 8am-10pm, although some larger Express stores may have shorter trading hours. Tesco has advised customers to check their local store opening times on the Tesco store locator portal.
On New Year's Eve, Morrisons main stores in England and Wales will be open from 7am-7pm, while their petrol stations will operate from 8.30am-6.30pm.
On New Year's Day, Morrisons' main stores will be open from 9am-6pm and 8.30am-6.30pm for Morrisons Petrol Station.
Normal trading hours will resume on Thursday, January 2, in England and Wales. Customers can find out more on their store locator website. At Waitrose, most shops will be closed on New Year's Day, with a small number remaining open for Deliveroo and Uber Eats orders.
Customers can check their local Waitrose store's opening times online. M&S Food will not be open on Wednesday, January 1 (New Year's Day). Verify the opening hours at your local store or online.
