There is no rest for the island’s art scene and just before the year ends, new exhibitions arrive. A showcase dedicated to Stelios Votsis opened this week at Gallery Morfi in Limassol which will run until mid-January. Considered the introducer of Cubism to Cyprus, Votsis left his own distinctive mark through his relentless pursuit of the new, his open approach to modern art and his bold artistic ideas.
The Larnaca-born artist dedicated his life to art until his passing on November 9, 2012. He studied at some of Europe’s top art schools and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Cyprus and abroad, earning international recognition. In Nicosia, Gloria Gallery will present the third solo painting exhibition of the distinguished sketcher and painter George Mitides.
His exhibition Muses will open this Thursday with an introductory speech by acclaimed visual artist Andreas Ladommatos. Women are the focal point of the exhibition, which explores the feminine presence as a source of inspiration, highlighting the magic and complexity of women through the unique perspective of the artist. Mitides said: “Art has always been within me.
Since I was a child, I have been moved by the search for beauty. Even when circumstances did not allow me to devote myself exclusively to painting, sketching was a substitute that kept my artistic concerns alive. This exhibition is the result of an inner exploration and freedom.
I render female figures with a sense of abstraction of the line and an intense colour element, letting the magic of colour guide the creation. This story fascinates me, and I hope it will also move the audience.” A new exhibition opens also in Paphos this week by Fotini Michailidi.
The Diverse Self will be hosted at Psifida Art Gallery from December 21 to January 19 exploring the themes of beauty, identity, femininity and community. More art happenings will fill the island’s cultural agenda until the end of December, introducing new artistic work to wrap up the year by highlighting Cyprus’ creative minds!
