ROCHESTER — One of Rochester’s newest taco trucks is going to be open year round. Jose’s Tacos is located at 3020 N. Broadway Ave.
in Rochester and opened three months ago. ADVERTISEMENT Since the business is so far north, the foot traffic can vary, but business is trending up. “It's been good,” said Levy Hernandez, the owner, through her translator Jose Rivera.
“It picked up slowly, but now it's picking up. We want Rochester to know that we're here for catering, any special events, too.” It took Hernandez and her team around a year to be fully prepared to open Jose’s Tacos.
They needed an efficient trailer with lots of room to make food from scratch and a food truck made more sense at the moment. They eliminated the rental cost of a brick and mortar which helped them start up. Hernandez has a passion for food and aims to put the best product forward.
They make everything fresh each day, from scratch. Tacos and tamales are the most popular items. They serve nine protein options for the tacos and also serve quesadillas, burritos and tortas, a Mexican sandwich.
Hernandez and her team are focused on food quality and creating a strong customer base. She loves being able to see customers every day and hear the feedback from guests. She has received very positive feedback, especially regarding her tamales, both pork and chicken.
There are a wide variety of taco trucks in Rochester, but Jose’s Tacos wants to be known for its consistent, high-quality food. Hernandez is especially proud of the tamales and is happy to see them getting praise. A tamale is a traditional Mesoamerican dish made of masa, a dough made from nixtamalized corn, which is steamed in a corn husk or banana leaves.
They are usually filled with meats, cheeses, fruits or vegetables. ADVERTISEMENT They are open six days a week and will continue to be throughout the winter. They are working on adding things to their menu and trying to find new ways to draw in customers.
“We're starting to serve chicharron,” Hernandez said. “It's pork skin. It's fried.
It's picking up real well here in Rochester. It’s from Mexico, so it's really hard to find this type of chicharon. It's picking up really well.
” Since the beginning was slow, Hernandez has listened to the customer base they have and is excited to continue growing. They can also do catering and have been excited to do more in that industry. The hardest part so far has been getting the name out there, in part, due to the location.
They have used social media to try to grow the business. They have no plans to move locations but have the capability to move the entire truck for catering or event purposes. They are eager to continue growing their business over the winter and hope business will continue to come even as the weather gets colder.
