The Hampshire Domestic Abuse Partnership shared this estimate as New Forest District Council (NFDC) outlined its new strategy to tackle the issue. The council's plans include bespoke training for staff, safe accommodation and support for victims. There will also be clear pathways to access specialist support services.
Councillor Dan Poole, portfolio holder for community safety and wellbeing, said: "We recognise the continued high prevalence of domestic abuse, acknowledging underreporting and the devastating impact it has on individuals, their families, communities and wider society. "Our new domestic abuse strategy and plans help align with the priorities in our corporate plan, including our priority to help people in the greatest need." The strategy aims to improve early identification and response to domestic abuse through targeted training for NFDC staff.
Some departments will have a 'domestic abuse champion' embedded within their service. The council hopes to create "balanced, resilient and healthy communities" where people feel safe, supported and have easy access to services. NFDC said it is committed to addressing domestic abuse through a multi-agency approach, working with organisations including Stop Domestic Abuse, The Hampton Trust, Hampshire County Council and New Forest Domestic Abuse Forum.
