KUCHING (BERNAMA) – Sarawak’s proactive move to develop an airport using its own funds has garnered the interest of foreign investors, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He said that the new Sarawak airport would draw inspiration from the airports in Abu Dhabi and Doha, featuring a seamless concept and cutting-edge technology. “This will establish Sarawak as a modern aviation hub capable of attracting greater investment by offering fully digital, efficient facilities that simplify processes like check-in and immigration through advanced technology.
“The concept speeds up passenger movement, providing greater comfort for visitors and regular users,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Carnival 2024 yesterday. Abang Johari said that the new airport, expected to accommodate up to 15 million passengers, would also stimulate the hotel industry and boost the local economy. He said the decision to take over MASwings and build a new airport would enable Sarawak to tap into the South and East Asian market, home to over three billion people.
Abang Johari said that Dubai’s considerable advancements over the past 25 years made him believe that Sarawak could also achieve similar progress. “Dubai relies solely on connectivity, but Sarawak has its natural attractions. We are not only focused on Sarawak or Malaysia; instead, we look for opportunities on a global scale,” he said.
