New police update on Stanley shooting as second man charged with murder and another arrested

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder after the shooting in Stanley. Thomas Lee Sterling was arrested on Wednesday, after 60-year-old Barry Dawson was killed last weekend Sterling, of Stanley , appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning, not entering any pleas and being remanded into custody until his next appearance at Teesside Crown Court on Monday, April 14. This charge comes as Kevin Dorward , 38, also charged with murder, appeared at court today, alongside Michaela Hetherington, 35, who was charged with perverting the course of justice.

Neither Dorward or Hetherington, of Annfield Plain, entered any pleas to the charges, and they have both been remanded in custody to next appear at Durham Crown Court on May 9. A 47-year-old man who was wanted in connection with the death handed himself in on Thursday afternoon, and he has been arrested on suspicion of murder, remaining in custody at this time. A 49-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were also arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of assisting an offender, but they have since been released on bail while further enquiries are carried out.



The investigation is continuing, and Durham Constabulary expect a significant police presence to stay in the community, as officers thoroughly investigate all lines of enquiry.
