Earlier this year, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that two different “Pirates of the Caribbean” films are in the works. From the indications given, one will be a straight up reboot with a whole new cast, and the other is a female-centric film with Margot Robbie slated for the lead. One of the two, likely the reboot, was originally penned by “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us” creator Craig Mazin and original ‘Pirates’ scribe Ted Elliot before a re-write by Jeff Nathanson (“The Young Woman and the Sea”).
He also indicated it’s unlikely Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow would show up in either, saying: “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it.” Now, reports that an untitled film in the franchise is targeting a late 2025 production start in on Saint Vincent island. No further word on casting or personnel at this time.
To date there have been five films in the franchise from the original in 2003 though to ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales’ in 2017. Previously it wasn’t clear if they would try and get actor Johnny Depp back or go for a full reboot..
