Ikea's new Brighton store in Churchill Square has taken another step closer to completion after its latest plans received planning approval

Ikea's new Brighton store in Churchill Square has taken another step closer to completion after its latest plans received planning approval. The approval, granted April 15, allows for the installation of Ikea's signage on the exterior of the shopping centre. The Swedish furniture giant submitted its plans earlier this year to Brighton and Hove City Council, proposing new signage, including digital advertising screens across two areas of the shopping centre.

These areas include the front of the centre facing Western Road and the east and west flanks of the centre overhanging Russell Road. It also proposed multiple new back-lit Ikea logos above the two existing towers.

A new digital screen advertisement with a red LED lighting strip is planned above the entrance doors at the eastern and western ends. A small Ikea sign is also planned along Russell Road on the east and west flanks of the southern elevation.

"It is considered that given the modern architecture, size of the building and set back from the public highway, that the advertisements in this case would not cause harm to the visual amenity of the area. "Due to their limited size and similarity to those currently in place on the building, no harms are considered to result in respect of visual amenity.

The Ingka Group, which owns Ikea, acquired Churchill Square in 2023.

The new Brighton store is set to open in the former Debenhams unit on the upper two levels later this year. Ingka Group said the approved external changes would "modernise the Churchill Square shopping centre and facilitate its rebranding to ensure the continued vitality of Churchill Square as the designated primary regional shopping centre"..
