The Healthy Life initiative is aimed at aiding people who suffer from long-term health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's, long-COVID, and musculoskeletal conditions, as well as those needing general weight management support. The programme is the brainchild of Shropshire Community Leisure Trust, and aims to provide a vital roadmap to recovery for those in need. Those wanting to join the programme can do so by obtaining a referral from their GP or healthcare professional.

Once enrolled, participants embark on a 12-week journey consisting of an initial assessment followed by a tailored exercise plan. This plan is crafted to cater to the individual’s specific needs, whether it be through one-on-one sessions, specialised classes like Good Boost, or other fitness activities. Amanda Arnold, Healthy Life coach for Shropshire Community Leisure Trust, said: "The goal of the programme is to help participants build more active, confident lifestyles, promoting both physical and mental wellbeing.

"By offering this programme, Shropshire Leisure Centres are making it easier for those who need it most to engage in regular physical activity, improve their health, and enhance their quality of life." Throughout the duration of the programme, participants will also have access to the gym, swimming facilities, and a variety of classes. They will be guided by dedicated instructors who will closely monitor their progress.

Grant Wilson, infrastructure, contracts, and compliance manager at Shropshire Council, added: "We are delighted to be working with our partners at Serco delivering this innovative programme to support people’s health and wellbeing at the leisure centres that they run on behalf of Shropshire Council." The programme is currently being run at Shrewsbury Sports Village, Market Drayton Swimming and Fitness Centre, Oswestry Swimming and Fitness Centre, and Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre, with the possibility of it later being extended to the new Whitchurch Swimming and Fitness Centre. It is open to individuals over 18 years old who are inactive, sedentary, or managing a controlled medical condition or disability.
