Hong Kong crossover sports star Jack Wong Hong-kit is targeting Olympic glory, after becoming the latest tennis refugee to thrive on the burgeoning pickleball circuit. Former world top-10 tennis players Jack Sock and Eugenie Bouchard are both carving out successful pickleball careers, while other converts include Americans San Querrey and Donald Young. Among critics of the rapidly-growing sport, however, is Andy Murray, the three-times grand slam champion.
He called the sport “annoying and easy” and for those who could not play tennis. World No 81 Wong, who switched sports midway through 2024 after 10 years as a tennis professional, said Murray’s assessment was wide of the mark. The 26-year-old spent 21⁄2 months training in the United States and has been drafted by Brisbane Breakers for the 2025 Major League Pickleball Australia campaign.
“I saw what Andy Murray said, anyone can say a sport is not much fun, but it is down to personal preference ...
I love pickleball and I think it is a sport,” said Wong, who trains at the new Go Park Sai Sha complex in Ma On Shan..
