Bill Simmons has slammed the New England Patriots for not tanking to receive the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft in a brutal rant. The Patriots headed into Week 18, the season's final regular-season game, with the worst record in the NFL - 3-13. Had they lost to the Buffalo Bills , who were resting most of their starters as they prepared for a postseason run, they would have been heading for the first overall pick in April's NFL Draft.

However, after being drafted in the sixth round last year, Joe Milton III, New England's third-string quarterback, impressed on his NFL debut, throwing for 241 yards and one touchdown while scoring a rushing touchdown of his own. The Patriots defeated the Bills by one score, 23-16, to finish their season 4-13, dropping them to fourth on the NFL Draft board. The Tennesee Titans will pick first following a blowout loss to the Houston Texans, with the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants ahead of the Patriots.

Aaron Rodgers drops biggest retirement hint yet after throwing fourth touchdown against Dolphins Andy Reid accidentally breaks unwanted record as Chiefs make sure Bengals don't make playoffs U.S. sports media personality Simmons, a lifelong Patriots fan, has fumed over the franchise's giving up the first overall pick.

Simmons believes New England should've tanked to give themselves a higher pick. "When I think of the dark, dumb days in the history of the team since I became a fan when I was like 4 years old, this has to be in the top 8 or 9. It's a complete organizational collapse, disgrace, it made no sense; it made no sense as it was happening.

The f------ Chiefs knew how to tank! "The Chiefs were like, 'Here's Carson Wentz just handing the ball off, and then we're bringing in our third-string quarterback.' We had the first pick; now we have the fourth pick. We've moved back four spots every single round, and one of my friends texted me saying, 'We traded the first pick for the fourth pick.

.. and got nothing in the trade'.

"And we moved back three spots every round! We gave up all these potential assets that came with the pick. The thing that kills me is they fired the coach right after the game. They knew they were going to be done.

He's trying to win, the offensive coordinator is trying to win, they don't know if they're gonna be here so they're coaching for their jobs, you've gotta get rid of them if you know you're gonna get rid of them - get rid of them before the game why not put this decision in the hands of people who care about the long-term plan instead of people who are trying to win the game? "We had a chance to have a franchise QB and the number one pick in the draft. It's three hours out of your life, we do this all the time in basketball. 'Yeah these two weeks are gonna suck but it's worth it for where we're gonna be in this spot after it's done' - this was three hours.

" The Patriots would not have drafted another quarterback, having taken Drake Maye out of North Carolina third overall last year. However, a higher pick would've allowed New England to take 2024 Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter off the board early, allowing the franchise to combine him with Maye..
