A new employee working as a chartered accountant allegedly lost her life due to work-related stress, and no one from the company attended her funeral. A 26-year-old woman, Anna Sebastian Perayil, passed away after only four months of working as a chartered accountant. She was employed by Ernst & Young (EY) in Pune, India, and her death is believed to be caused by excessive workload and work-related stress.

Perayil, who hailed from Kerala, India, started working at EY on March 19, 2024, full of life and ambition. However, on July 20, 2024, her family received the news of her sudden death. Her mother, Anita Augustine, later wrote an open letter to the company, blaming the stressful work environment for her daughter’s untimely death.

According to Anita, Anna worked tirelessly to meet the demands placed on her by the company. The long hours and heavy workload began taking a toll on Anna’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The new employee started experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and overwhelming stress, but continued to push herself, believing that hard work was the key to success.

Despite suffering from chest pain and receiving advice from a cardiologist to rest, Anna continued working, driven by the pressure to complete her tasks. The worker was aware that many employees had already resigned due to the high demands, but her manager urged her to stay to improve the team’s reputation. Anna was assigned tasks that stretched into the night and over the weekends.

Even as she tried to rest, work messages continued to flood in. Anna’s concerns about the workload were ignored by the company, and after her death, her family expressed disappointment that no representatives from the company attended her funeral or offered condolences.
