However, while the concept may be new to the city, donuts have long been a part of JJ Bean’s history, dating back four generations to when JJ Bean first began. The name JJ Bean (named after John Neate Jr., a.k.a JJ) didn’t come around until it was established in 1996. But before it was JJ Bean, the family operated a coffee and donut shop called Neates Coffee.“After immigrating to Canada in the early 1900s, F.J. Neate (Frank, ‘Gumpy,’ originally from Wales) apprenticed in the coffee roasting trade and in 1945 started Neates Coffee. His wife, Ella (Isabella, ‘Granny,’ a telephone operator from Scotland), made donuts, and together they pedalled deliveries of fresh coffee and donuts around Vancouver,” shared Neate Donuts.Along the way to becoming JJ Bean, coffee eventually became the main focus, and the donuts became a part of the family history.“We discussed introducing donuts for decades, but it wasn’t until Sunwood Square opened in 2021 that possibility became reality,” said Neate Donuts. “If we were going to do donuts, we had to do it right — it’s part of the original legacy, after all.”> > > > > > View this post on Instagram> > > > > > > A post shared by NicoleMareeDesign (@nicolemareedesign)Fast forward to today, and Neate Donuts has softly opened its door.
