Ludhiana: In a major relief for residents of Madhopuri and New Madhopuri, the Ludhiana civic body has floated tenders for constructing a new bridge over the Buddha Dariya , aimed at preventing flash floods during heavy rainfall. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.96 crore, and it falls under the Ludhiana Smart City Mission .

The current bridge, which obstructs water flow during the monsoon, will be dismantled and replaced. The new, wider bridge will alleviate waterlogging in the area, which has been a long-standing issue. Civic officials have assured that the new construction will significantly improve drainage, reducing the risk of floods in the surrounding low-lying areas.

Decade-Long Delay The proposal to replace old bridges over Buddha Dariya has been on the table for over a decade. However, due to financial constraints and administrative delays, the project never took off until now. Officials are optimistic that this bridge will mark the beginning of long-awaited improvements to the city’s flood management infrastructure.

"The new bridge will be higher and larger than the existing structure, allowing faster drainage of rainwater," said a senior official. "Once completed, the risk of flooding in nearby areas will be greatly reduced." Addl Infra Upgrades Besides the new bridge, several other old bridges over Buddha Dariya and Sidhwan Canal are also slated for reconstruction.

Meanwhile, the civic body has also initiated a renovation project for its Zone-B office. Tenders have been floated for repairs and upgrades to the building, with an estimated cost of over Rs 1 crore. Zonal Commissioner Neeraj Jain and Superintending Engineer Ranjit Singh confirmed that the condition of the Zone-B office had deteriorated due to leaks, dampness, and poor infrastructure.

The renovation, estimated at Rs 1.23 crore, is expected to address these issues and provide better working conditions for staff and visitors alike.
