The UK Government has confirmed that 90 per cent of all Blue Badge applications are now being made through the online service. The Department for Transport also revealed it is running a "programme of continuous improvement to the digital service to make online badge applications quicker and easier for applicants and local authorities". Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood further explained that this programme includes "undertaking specific research and testing to identify innovative improvements to the online application process".
This information was provided in a written response on Monday, following a question from Reform UK MP Lee Anderson about what steps are being taken to "reduce processing times for applications to the Blue Badge digital service". The Blue Badge Digital Service provides a national online application and badge management facility via GOV.UK.
In 2019, the eligibility criteria for a Blue Badge was expanded to include individuals with non-visible disabilities such as Parkinson's, dementia and epilepsy. This change was implemented to help more people park closer to their destinations when they travel as a driver or a passenger, reports the Daily Record . While many users are aware that their Blue Badge is valid for three years from the issue date, they might not know that renewal isn't automatic.
To avoid any issues, it's recommended to submit a renewal application 12 weeks (three months) before the current permit expires, ensuring the new one arrives before the old one becomes invalid. If Blue Badge holders continue to display an expired permit, they risk facing a substantial £1,000 fine. This is because using an out-of-date Blue Badge is considered 'misuse', which is a criminal offence.
According to Transport Scotland's guidance: "Misuse of a badge is a crime. You may be prosecuted if you misuse a badge." Additionally, eligibility for a Blue Badge is reassessed with each renewal application.
Official guidance states: "Your Blue Badge is not renewed automatically. You need to reapply for it every 3 years. "Your eligibility will be checked every time you reapply.
This is to make sure you can still get a Blue Badge. Your local council processes your application and decides if you can get a Blue Badge. You should reapply 12 weeks before your badge expires.
" The cost of a Blue Badge varies across the UK - Up to £10 in England, £20 in Scotland, and free in Wales. You can submit your Blue Badge renewal application on the GOV.UK website.
