NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets guard Tyrese Martin was one of the players who started in Sunday's 113-105 loss to the New York Knicks in the season finale. While Martin continued his solid play to end the season, he was appreciative of what this season meant for him in his career, but he is also looking towards what he can do next season to be more impactful."Basketball-wise, I really haven't thought about that (goals for next season).
(The) season just ended a couple minutes ago, but I definitely want to become one of the leaders on the team," Martin said following the game. Despite beginning the year on a training camp contract, Martin is the fourth-oldest player on the team while also being one of the least-experience on the roster in terms of NBA reps."I've played probably the least amount of NBA games on this team coming into the season," Martin continued.
"But, I'm probably the third-oldest guy on this team so I played a lot of basketball still. I feel like using my voice, I feel like I see the game well, Coach (Jordi Fernandez) trusted me to use my voice too, and the guys kind of listening to me."Martin, 25, did not begin the season as one of the leaders as he was still fighting for playing time in the rotation, something he earned around the middle of December after showing his ability to contribute off the bench.
Towards the end of the season, Martin proved that he could take on more responsibility as a ball-handler and decision-maker, the kind of player that Brooklyn could use next season assuming that the rebuild continues. The 2024-25 season was one with plenty of milestones for Martin as he not only quadrupled the amount of games that he appeared in along with playing far more minutes, he also had his Two-Way contract converted into a standard deal. Whether Martin returns to Brooklyn for next season depends on if the team picks up his $2.
1 team option, but he seems confident that he can use his voice to make a difference next year."So, I think I just want to step into more (responsibility), be more comfortable being a leader," Martin explained. "Whether it's with the second unit, the young guys coming in, things like that.
I feel like that's something I could definitely grow and excel in going forward." Martin ends his 2024-25 season averaging 8.7 points, 3.
7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 40.6% from the field and 35.
1% from three-point land. This article originally appeared on Nets Wire: Nets' Tyrese Martin wants to be a leader for next year's team.
