Netflix has entered the chat of banging medical dramas with its own original series, Pulse. All 10 episodes are available to stream now, and you might have noticed a dig at Grey’s Anatomy fans. There is an unspoken rule of thumb when it comes to watching any medical procedure – you binge as much of your TV show as you can, and then you’ve earned your honorary doctor’s degree.
Whether it’s Grey’s Anatomy, ER, or Max’s new drama The Pitt , we’ve all spent some virtual time in hospital and immediately thought we could perform emergency stomach surgery. With 21 seasons now under its belt, Grey’s Anatomy fans should have the most hypothetical knowledge. But thanks to Netflix’s Pulse, they’ve been quickly humbled.
Grey’s Anatomy fans aren’t doctors, and Pulse reminds us that In Episode 2 of Pulse, new Chief Resident Danny Sims is seen telling new hospital intern Camila to find a room where attending staff can take a quick nap if they’re able to during a hurricane. Camila replies that she thought dedicated rooms with bunk beds would be where they stayed. “You grew up watching Grey’s Anatomy, didn’t you?” Danny asks, with Camila nodding yes.
“Forget everything you’ve ever seen,” Danny responds. Not only does the scene put Camila in her place, but it also immediately roasts any Grey’s fans watching. We’re all guilty of thinking we know everything about the medical world, but as Danny reminds us, nothing is how it looks.
It’s not often a binge-worthy TV show calls out fans of a bigger rival, let alone a medical drama. However, it’s a clever tactic for the new kid on the block to directly appeal to a fanbase that should be interested in what Netflix has to offer. As Ivy Richardson at Buzzfeed explains , “Thanks to Grey ’ s , I’ve perfected the art of being a backseat surgeon. At least once every episode you’ll find me screaming ‘he’s in V-Fib’, ‘push 10 of epi’, or ‘start a central line’ at the TV, and if that doesn’t qualify me to give medical advice, I don’t know what does.” While there are clearly similarities between the two, Pulse has a long way to go until it reaches the dizzy heights of Grey’s 21 seasons.
While nothing has been greenlit yet, the latter’s popularity all but confirms Season 22 will be on the cards at some point in the future. Could the streaming service have made something bigger than its predecessors? We’re yet to find out if Pulse will be back for a second season, so stay tuned. Pulse is available to stream on Netflix now.
