Netflix is set to remove one of the scariest horror films of the decade this month with viewers only having days left to stream it. The A24 film Hereditary, directed by Ari Aster has received significant acclaim from both critics and audiences. It premiered in 2018 at Sundance and immediately garnered buzz with many horror fans considering it a modern masterpiece.
The story follows the Graham family after the death of the reclusive grandmother. As strange and terrifying events unfold, secrets about their ancestry begin to surface. According to the official synopsis the family "try to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited.
" Critics have praised the film for its atmospheric tension and performances, particularly that of Toni Collette. Many critics and fans believed Toni Collette deserved an Oscar nomination for her role - her performance is often cited as one of the best in modern horror. The film holds a 90% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating based on 384 critic reviews, with an average rating of 8.
3/10. The audience score stands at 71% from over 10,000 ratings. It also holds an IMDb rating of 7.
3 out of 10, based on approximately 408,000 user ratings. The film has a Metascore of 87 out of 100, indicating "universal acclaim" from 49 critic reviews. For instance, The Hollywood Reporter noted, "Hereditary takes the core haunting element of a spirit with a malevolent agenda and runs with it in a seemingly endless series of unexpected directions over two breathless hours of escalating terror that never slackens for a minute.
" Meanwhile, The Independent called the movie “the singularly most terrifying horror film in years". However, Hereditary will be leaving Netflix in the US and UK on April 15 as part of acquisition renewals. Luckily, it's still available to stream for Prime members.
Alex Wolff, who stars as son Peter in the movie, told VICE that he suffered with PTSD after filming. He said: "It stuck with me well after. When I started talking about it, all these flashes with all this disturbing s**t I went through sorta came back in a flood.
"It kept me up at night to where I got into a habit of emotional masochism at that point of just trying to take in every negative feeling I could draw from. He added: "I don’t think you can go through something like this and not have some sort of PTSD afterwards." Ari Aster originally envisioned Hereditary as a family drama with horror elements rather than a traditional horror movie.
He referred to it as a “tragedy that curdles into a nightmare.” Hereditary has been compared to classics like Rosemary’s Baby and Don’t Look Now for its atmosphere and psychological depth. The film helped solidify A24’s reputation for producing highbrow, artful horror films, paving the way for movies like Midsommar, The Lighthouse, and The Witch to gain more mainstream respect.
