Written by Bobby Boermans and Simon De Waal, iHostage features Dutch actors, including Soufiane Moussouli, Loes Haverkort and Admir Sehovic. Netflix’s recent release, the Dutch thriller iHostage is based on the 2022 hostage situation at an Amsterdam Apple store. In February 2022, a gunman broke into an Apple store located in Amsterdam and held hostages, demanding $227 million in cryptocurrency in return.
Ultimately, the gunman died after getting hit by a police car and all the hostages safely escaped the situation. As per Netflix’s description iHostage is a gripping thriller that delivers a tense and emotional account of the 2022 Amsterdam hostage situation through the eyes of the attacker, the helpless hostages and first responders. The makers of the movie tried to capture the tension of the incident in order to provide a glimpse of what had unfolded in reality.
In a video posted on YouTube recently, the director of the movie Bobby Boermans gave a sneak peek into the behind the scenes of the movie. Boermans was seen sharing the process of how they created an Apple store for the movie. The director shared that as filming inside an actual Apple store wasn’t possible, they reconstructed an actual Apple store.
“The floor space is the exact same size as the retail store. I don’t think this technique has been used on such a large scale in the Netherlands before," Boermans shared, denoting that it was clearly the future and viewers wouldn’t be able to spot the difference. Boermans, who stays near the Apple store where the incident unfolded, told TIME that hostage situations are scarce in the country and that’s what made the incident strikingly unusual.
“A man demanding 200 million cryptocurrency, chose to take a hostage in broad daylight on one of the busiest squares in Amsterdam," Boermans expressed his disbelief to the publication. Written by Bobby Boermans and Simon De Waal, iHostage is now streaming on Netflix. The movie features Dutch actors, including Soufiane Moussouli, Loes Haverkort, Admir Sehovic, and others.
The movie has received a mixed reaction from the audience. While some stated it was a decent Dutch movie, others felt the ending was a bit flat..
