A Netflix series that's been dubbed 'mind-blowing' and is considered by some as even better than The Walking Dead, is also being touted as the ideal watch for fans of The Last of Us. Black Summer, exclusively streaming on Netflix, is a treat for those who relish a post-apocalyptic and zombie-themed story. The show is a spin-off from the horror series Z Nation and unfolds within the same universe.
For those interested in catching up, Z Nation is currently free to stream on Tubi or available via Amazon Prime. However, prior knowledge isn't necessary to enjoy Black Summer. The plot kicks off six weeks into the zombie apocalypse and follows the character Rose, portrayed by Jaime King, who is separated from her daughter, Anna.
This triggers a desperate quest to find her. Joined by a small band of refugees in North America, Rose must navigate a hostile new world and make ruthless decisions during the deadliest summer of the apocalypse. The premise bears resemblance to the first season of The Last of Us, which also features two characters embarking on a perilous cross-country journey, confronting other survivors and creatures, reports the Mirror .
On Rotten Tomatoes, the show boasts an impressive 85% rating, with its second season scoring a flawless 100%. In numerous Reddit threads where fans seek recommendations for shows similar to The Last of Us, Black Summer is frequently suggested. While the upcoming second season of Last of Us is set to get underway, Black Summer could be just the ticket to help fans with the inevitable wait between episodes.
However, the downside is that there are only two seasons available, as Netflix confirmed in 2021 that a third season was not on the cards. One critic explained why it's still worth a watch, stating: "Don't be gulled by zombie apocalypse. This ain't The Walking Dead or any of its spinoffs.
