Netflix fans have branded a drama that just dropped on the streamer "the best medical show of all time" - but you've probably never heard of it. The Resident originally premiered on Fox in 2018, before being cancelled by the network in 2023 following its five-year run and is now storming the UK charts on the streaming platform. The show, which follows the medical staff at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Georgia, also stars Gilmore Girls fan favourite, Matt Czuchry.
Following its renewed popularity thanks to Netflix, fans are now calling for the series to be renewed, with some even dubbing it the “best medical drama ever”. Conrad Hawkins in the show, who has been described as a “fist-bumping, cocky, and beloved senior resident” who “knows the rules and how to break them.” The series also stars Manish Dayal as Dr. Devon Pravesh, Bruce Greenwood as Dr.
Randolph Bell and Revenge’s Emily VanCamp as nurse practitioner, Nicolette Nevin. Following its release last month, fans have been binge-watching the series, with many of them taking to X, formerly Twitter , raving about The Resident. One said: “I don't usually enjoy medical dramas but #TheResident is fire.
" Another shared: “I don't know why nobody is talking about The Resident! That series is the best medical series I've watched! #TheGOATOnNetflix #TheResident.” Meanwhile, a third exclaimed: “The fact that #TheResident was cancelled is criminal, I haven't enjoyed a show this much in such a long time.” Fox cancelled the medical drama, which was filmed in and around Atlanta after six seasons.
The decision came nearly three months after The Resident, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, finished its 13-episode sixth season. Speculation about the show’s fate swirled since the season — the shortest of the show’s six — ended. According to Fox, The Resident had its lowest-rated season to date among adults 18-49 and the show’s cross-platform audience of 6.
9 million viewers was down 12 percent from the 2021-22 season. According to TVLine , eagle-eyed fans speculated that a seventh season was dead on arrival when they noticed what appeared to be numerous recognisable props from the show at a "major network medical drama prop and liquidation" in Georgia in March, last year.
