WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Black Mirror season 7 Netflix's hit series Black Mirror has made a triumphant return with its seventh season, featuring six more chilling tales of technological horror and fascination. One of the most eagerly awaited episodes was USS Callister: Into Infinity, which is a follow-up to the 2017 episode USS Callister. Fans were thrilled to be reunited with the crew of the titular ship after they managed to escape from Robert Daly's (played by Jesse Plemons) computer and into the vast expanse of the game's universe.
After celebrating their escape and the death of their tormentor, the crew members were unfortunately faced with a horrifying new reality as they struggled to survive in this unfamiliar territory, reports the Mirror US . They were now forced to steal player tags from Infinity subscribers and frantically searched for a solution to their dilemma, before realising that deceased crew member James Walton (Jimmi Simpson) could hold the answer. This lets members watch live and on-demand TV content without a satellite dish or aerial and includes hit shows like Black Mirror and You. In the climax of USS Callister, Walton sacrificed himself by rebooting the ship's engines after they became trapped in an asteroid belt while attempting to reach the wormhole. At the time, they were also trying to evade Daly, who was pursuing them in a deserted spaceship.
In the original episode, Walton was incinerated by the engines, but in the latest instalment it was revealed that fragments of his DNA had survived and he continued to exist within the universe. After finding Walton on an odd planet, the clone of Callister Inc.'s CEO grabbed some treasured possessions, including a rock with a face and a hole at the back, hinting it was a makeshift sex toy he'd made during his lonely stint.
The gag about Walton's sex toy rock popped up several times in Into Infinity, but there seems to be a potential continuity blunder. In USS Callister, Daly's clones were all missing their private parts. Walton told Cole how this was part of Daly's family-friendly universe, akin to his adored Space Fleet.
Walton even flaunted his absence of genitalia and told her: "We've tried grinding our mounds together out of sheer boredom. No sensation at all." Cole was livid after Daly stripped her of her life and her vagina, so she pledged to defeat him, making this her driving force.
Considering Infinity is meant to be a family-friendly universe, Walton shouldn't have genitals even after regeneration, which suggests a possible plot hole or continuity mistake. However, considering the entire cloning concept in USS Callister already challenges reality, this might just be another instance where disbelief must be suspended. Additionally, maybe Walton, after being incinerated and reborn in Infinity, regenerated his genitals and thus required a sexual release.
