The movie, which was only in theaters for a limited release in 2011, is available to stream on Netflix and has a runtime of 90 minutes.

Netflix has just dropped a new thriller that had only a limited theater release over ten years ago. The film, titled Retreat, stars Cillian Murphy and Thandiwe Newton and marks the directorial debut of Carl Tibbets, who is best known for directing two Black Mirror episodes - White Bear and White Christmas. In Retreat, Cillian and Thandiwe play Martin and Kate, a married couple whose relationship hits a rough patch following Kate's miscarriage.

As they navigate their grief, Martin (Cillian) takes Kate (Thandiwe) to Blackholme, a secluded, uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland where they had once shared happier times. However, the holiday starts off on a shaky note as old resentments resurface and their cottage experiences a series of power outages. Things take a dramatic turn when Kate spots an injured armed man collapsing near their holiday home.

When he regains consciousness, he introduces himself as Jack, claims to be a soldier, and warns them of a deadly airborne virus that has hit the UK. Jack insists that they must barricade themselves in the cottage to avoid contracting the disease. As the plot unfolds, the couple begins to suspect that their supposed savior might actually be trying to ensnare them due to his controlling and unpredictable behavior.

The suspenseful nature of Retreat will keep you on tenterhooks for its entire one-and-a-half-hour runtime. While it draws comparisons to the 2001 film 28 Days Later, the script for Retreat, penned by Carl and novelist Janice Hallet, delves deeper into the psychological realm. It centers around three individuals trapped in a situation where trust is scarce, and manipulation becomes a necessary tool for survival.

The stellar casting of the movie truly sets it apart. Cillian delivers an outstanding performance, captivating audiences alongside Thandiwe. After Retreat, Cillian went on to star in the beloved series Peaky Blinders, which aired from 2013 until 2022.
