A 2012 Western flick that fans have dubbed as 'Quentin Tarantino at his best' is now available to stream on Netflix . Django Unchained sparked a wave of controversy amongst critics and cinema-goers when it was released over a decade ago. It is an R-rated drama that tells the story of a freed slave who embarks on a mission to save his wife from a brutal plantation owner, with the assistance of a German bounty hunter.
The journey is fraught with violent encounters, something that fans have come to anticipate from the renowned director. The star-studded cast includes Jamie Foxx in the lead role as Django, Christopher Waltz as his partner Dr King Schultz, Leonardo DiCaprio as the ruthless plantation owner Calvin Candie, Samuel L. Jackson as Stephen, Calvin's devoted house slave, and Kerry Washington as Django's estranged wife, Broomhilda von Shaft.
Upon its release, Django Unchained garnered numerous awards, with Waltz bagging an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and Tarantino winning the award for Best Original Screenplay. Despite its critical acclaim, the film faced backlash from viewers who felt it treated a sensitive topic lightly. Critics pointed out that the drama uses the 'N-word' over 100 times, which some labelled as insensitive and excessive.
Quentin Tarantino defended his film as a truthful portrayal of the slavery era. After a UK screening, he addressed a Bafta audience, saying: "I'm here to tell you that however bad things get in the movie, a lot worse s*** actually happened," reports Surrey Live . Despite the backlash, many cinema-goers were captivated by the film.
A Rotten Tomatoes user commented: "This movie gets you hooked within minutes and the expense of what is going to happen next keeps you entertained and on the edge of your seat." Another added their kudos: "The best, most uncomfortable film ever," and another advised: "LOVED IT! Never seen this before. You're missing out if you don't watch this.
