A mermaid wearing suspenders was spotted inside Cottonwood Falls earlier this week. Or, at least that was the call an Nelson Police Department officer responded to on Oct. 1, when a man called dispatch, believing he had seen a mermaid, possibly wearing suspenders, repeatedly waving from inside Cottonwood Falls.

An NPD officer attended the scene to make sure that there was no one in need of assistance, said NPD community safety officer Silk Edwards. “The complainant directed him to the thing he had seen in the water, which turned out to be a pair of blue tie-down straps that had become lodged under a rock,” she said. “While the presence of mermaids in Cottonwood Park cannot be ruled out for certain, the Nelson Police have concluded this file.

” Throughout the week, NPD members responded to a total of 109 calls for service in the city, with the mermaid incident being the only aquatic life-related call..
