share 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Noted sci-fi film director Neill Blomkamp of District 9 (2009) and Elysium (2013) fame, is plotting a course to squash the bugs as he is set to write and direct an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel story, Starship Troopers , by Robert A. Heinlein. The 1959 military sci-fi story was previously adapted into a 1997 film from director Paul Verhoeven, of RoboCop , Total Recall , and Basic Instinct fame, which heavily satirized and amplified the over-the-top glorification of the military.
While the story about Earth’s war with a spider-like alien sepecies was initially considered a flop, the film is now considered a cult classic that mocks the concept of authoritarian governance and Nazi influences, which has recently seen a more general acceptance within certain political communuties. Advertisement ▼ Rather than serving as a reboot or remake of that film, Blomkamp’s version is expected to be a more faithful adaptation of the book’s source material of war, militarism, moral decline and freedom, which are topics that Blomkamp has addressed in District 9 , Elysium and Chappie (2015). Blomkamp’s last film was the game to movie adaptation of Gran Turismo (2023) and for a period, his name was attached to a sequel to Alien , though that eventually failed to materialize.
