It’s a red state. Nebraska went into the CHI Health Center, silenced a hostile, red-speckled environment and upset Creighton for the second time in three years, using suffocating defense to lead wire to wire in Friday’s 74-63 win over the No. 14 Bluejays.
The Huskers (4-1) pressured the Jays (4-1) from tipoff to the final buzzer, their length and size dragging CU’s free-flowing style into a slugfest and forcing 17 turnovers. Creighton had a five-minute scoring drought midway through the first half — a mix of missed shots, questionable decision-making and the Huskers’ pressure-heavy defense. During that stretch, Nebraska rattled off an 11-0 run en route to a game-high 18-point lead it never fully relinquished.
CU guard Steven Ashworth, the Jays’ second-leading scorer, left the game late after landing awkwardly following 3-pointer. He needed help off the floor. Juwan Gary and Brice Williams both dropped 16 points to lead five different Huskers in double figures while they held the Bluejays to 32.
7% from the field, including 28.6% on 3-pointers. Creighton got 22 points from Pop Isaacs, but center Ryan Kalkbrenner was held to four points on one attempt, a 3-pointer.
