Pune: NCP MLA Anna Bansode, representing Pimpri constituency , on Tuesday filed his nomination as the Mahayuti alliance candidate for the Maharashtra assembly's deputy speaker position. The election is set for Wednesday — the final day of the assembly session. Accompanied by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy CM Ajit Pawar, and ministers Chandrakant Patil and Uday Samant, Bansode submitted his nomination in Mumbai.

A three-term MLA from Pimpri, a reserved seat for Scheduled Caste candidates, Bansode is likely to be elected unopposed. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is not expected to field a candidate owing to their limited numbers in the assembly. The deputy speaker's post was previously held by NCP's Narhari Zirwal in the Eknath Shinde-led govt.

However, with Zirwal now serving as minister in the state cabinet, Bansode is likely to become the new deputy speaker. Bansode, who started his political career as a corporator from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation in 1997, was elected to the state assembly in 2009. Since then he contested four assembly elections from the Pimpri seat, securing victory on three occasions.
