The Philadelphia 76ers weren't expected to be out of playoff contention around this time of year. In fact, Philadelphia had the third-best odds of winning the championship following the signing of forward Paul George in the offseason. However, the Sixers have struggled with injuries to several of their key contributors during the season, though that might not have fully contributed to their downfall .

"The Philadelphia 76ers were horrid this season, and while injuries to Joel Embiid, Jared McCain and Paul George were primarily to blame, Nick Nurse could take the fall for a brutal year," Bleacher Report's Eric Pincus wrote. Of course, it's hard for a team to win games without their superstars in the lineup, especially one of Embiid's caliber. Nurse opened up about how difficult it's been for his team to find a rhythm following the Sixers' 118-95 loss to the Miami Heat on March 29.

“You were kind of always holding out hope that the team was playing better and getting some wins and hopefully get some players back,” Nurse said.“[I] said this numerous times: it just didn’t seem like the injury bug would ever leave us. It just seemed like every time we’d have a good game and get a win or something, it’d cost us a player or two for the next one and we could never build any momentum.

” Nurse coached the Toronto Raptors to a championship in 2019 , but he hasn't found the same success in Philly. Sometimes a new voice and a different system could help bring a team back into title contention, so it wouldn't be a shock to see the Sixers part ways with the 2020 Coach of the Year in an attempt to salvage their current situation.
