The Navy and the Police Narcotics Bureau, in a joint operation conducted on Sunday, seized what is believed to be the biggest-ever drug consignment to be taken into custody in Sri Lanka. The drug haul, weighing about 863 kilos, has a street value of about Rs 1.6 billion.
It was seized in the southern seas. The drug consignment has been linked to three major drug traffickers, including Jagamuni Sujeewa De Soyza, also known as Kosgoda Sujee, who is believed to be hiding in Dubai. The drug haul consists of 671 kilos of crystal methamphetamine (popularly known as ‘Ice’) and 192 kilos of heroin.
Seven suspects, aged between 20 and 58, have been arrested. The individuals, hailing from areas such as Hikkaduwa, Ahungalla, Beruwala, Gonapinuwa, and Aluwala, were responsible for transporting the narcotic consignment. The drugs, along with the suspects, were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau yesterday.
Investigations are continuing as authorities continue to unravel the full scope of the trafficking operation.
