WE have been alerted to the fact – and reminded often of late – that Malaysia is at a critical juncture in its demographic shift towards an ageing population. But what is alarming is that we are actually categorised as a rapidly ageing nation based on the trajectory of future growth of our elderly population. In 2022 we were an ageing nation with 2.
4 million senior citizens aged 65 years and above, comprising 7.6% of the population. This is extrapolated to grow to 14% of the population in 2044, when we will become an aged nation.
When senior citizens comprise 20% of the population in 2055, we will be a super-aged nation. That’s not very far away..
