Nationwide Building Society is set to introduce a new feature in its app later this year, which was revealed following an enquiry into the protocol for unlocking a PIN code. Currently, if you input your PIN incorrectly three times, the security measure locks it. To unlock your PIN, there are limited options, one of which involves using a cash machine.
As it stands now, customers have no online solution or branch counter service for retrieving their PIN at Nationwide. However, change is on the horizon, as a spokesperson confirmed: "If a customer has forgotten their PIN, they can request a new one via the Internet Bank, over the phone or in branch." The spokesperson also disclosed that "The new PIN will be sent to the address registered on their account.
Later this year our customers will also be able to view their existing PIN via the Mobile Banking App." While the precise launch date remains unspecified, Nationwide elaborated on the current process for those who recall their PIN, stating: "If a customer has remembered their PIN, they can use an ATM, including those in our branches, to unlock their PIN by inputting the correct PIN and selecting account services," reports Coventry Live . The statement concluded with clarity on the unlocking process, noting that "Only the customer can unlock their PIN, so it is not possible to unlock the PIN at the counter.
" Nationwide has clarified that card readers are not capable of unlocking a PIN. The building society's website delineates a straightforward four-step method to unlock your PIN at any British ATM showing the LINK symbol. Following these steps should lead to the machine confirming a successful action with a 'successful' message on the screen.
For those who have forgotten their PIN, Nationwide offers a solution: you can ask for either a new one or a reminder of the current one, which will be sent via post and should arrive within three to five working days. Even if your PIN escapes you, withdrawing cash and completing payments remain possible. In order to avail certain banking services without your PIN, visit a Nationwide branch carrying identification such as a passport or driving licence.
One customer, who obtained a new card featuring a different set of the last four digits, raised a concern regarding the updating of direct debits. In response, Nationwide provided assurance: "You don't need to change over your direct debits nor any recurring card payments as a result of card renewal.".
