DENVER — Colorado could be getting a professional women's soccer team. Denver is one of three cities named as finalists for a National Women's Soccer League expansion team. Cincinnati and Cleveland are also in the running.

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman has said the league plans to announce the 16th team by the end of the year. "Denverites are the most passionate fan base in the country, and we are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to bring a NWSL team to our city,” said Mayor Mike Johnston in a release Friday . “Despite producing some of the best athletes in the world, Denver is the largest American city without a professional women’s sports team.

It is past time to rectify that tragedy by welcoming the NWSL to our community, and we are excited to continue these conversations with the league.” The Denver group bidding to bring a team here had multiple conversations about potentially using the National Western Center as the site where it would develop a stadium, according to public records obtained by the Denver Business Journal . But a spokesperson for the 250-acre campus, largely owned by the city, confirmed the center is now “off the table” as a potential home for the franchise.

The NWSL, one of two professional women's soccer leagues in the United States, is currently comprised of 14 teams: Angel City FC Bay FC Chicago Red Stars Houston Dash Kansas City Current NJ/NY Gotham FC North Carolina Courage Orlando Pride Portland Thorns FC Racing Louisville FC San Diego Wave FC Seattle Reign FC Utah Royals FC Washington Spirit The league’s unnamed 15th team will begin play in 2026 in Boston. The Orlando Pride and the Washington Spirit play Saturday for this season's NWSL championship at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City.
