Ludhiana: Altogether 632 peddlers have been arrested and 479 NDPS cases have been registered in the Ludhiana police range from Jan 1 to April 3, as part of the ‘Yudh Nasheya Virudh' campaign launched by Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann. Khanna, Ludhiana Rural and SBS Nagar police districts make up the Ludhiana range. 89 quintals of poppy husk, 5 kg of charas, 7.22 kg of ganja, 3.13 kg of heroin, 312 gm of intoxicant powder, 30 gm of ICE and 16,465 pills were confiscated during the crackdown on drug peddlers and trafficking.

This apart, the DIG said, drug money amounting to Rs 1.14 lakh was recovered, disrupting illicit drug networks in the area. Police also demolished 15 illegal constructions on encroached govt land, with plans to bulldoze 20 more in the coming days, she added.

Police said authorities also attached properties worth Rs 33,98,96,230 belonging to drug traffickers, sending a strong message that crime will not pay. Meanwhile, a number of former addicts shared their experiences. Talking to TOI, a 31-year-old former addict-turned-counsellor, who helps addicts give up drugs and belongs to the Mullanpur Dakha area, said he started with medical drugs in 2008 before switching over to ‘chitta' (heroin) around 2014 and then got hooked on opium before giving it up in 2016.

He said because of drugs, he got divorced from his wife, and she and his four-year-old daughter live in Canada. Another former addict, a 46-year-old typist from a village near Khanna, said he was addicted to opium from 2015 to 2022. He said he gave up drugs because he didn't want his son, who is in Class 11, and daughter, who is a working professional, to face humiliation because of him.
