RESIDENTS of Gizo have expressed sadness over the removal of the iconic Naru trees that stood for decades near the Solomon Airlines office. The trees, some well-loved landmark, evoked fond memories for many in the community who had come to appreciate their presence over the years. According to a staff from Solomon Airlines, the decision to remove the trees was made for safety reasons.
“The trees were growing too large and their branches were encroaching on the main power lines and over to the main road as well,” the staff told Solomon Star yesterday. Solomon Power had also advised the airline to proceed with its removal to mitigate potential hazards. In response to the public concerns, the officer assured that replanting efforts are planned.
“We will replant trees again,” he said, emphasising the commitment to restoring greenery and shade in the area. The trees’ removal have sparked concern among residents, who highlighted that the shade they provided was a valuable community asset. The shade provided by the Naru trees became a popular spot for locals seeking respite from the intense Gizo sun heat.
Taxi drivers, in particular, favored the area for parking under its cool canopy during sunny days. ‘’The removal of the Naru trees gave a different a different looks and landscape that looks bare but overall, we are sad to see those trees down and there is no shade and resting place to take a nap during hot sunny days,’’ Gizo resident Patty Micah said. ‘’However we understand Solomon Airlines has a good reason for the removal of the Naru trees and we hope to see better plans and development coming up,’’ he said.
While their absence left a void, the promise of replanting offers hope that the space will once again serve as a gathering point for the Gizo community..
