Like any writer with a sizeable platform, I am very hated by some people online. Whenever I become the target of an internet pile-on, I try to assume that it is 98pc about broader frustrations and, at most, 2pc actually about me. It doesn’t always work.
Sometimes I still take it personally. But I’ve accepted that if I want to write for the papers, I need to grow a thick skin. A few years ago, I was online a lot myself.
On the website then known as Twitter, I had 20,000 followers — not a lot compared to actual celebrities, but far too many for me..
