Nanta, who is Kapit MP, stated that the longhouse residents incurred losses of approximately RM200,000 involving property damage in the incident that occurred on Nov 27.

“I will provide immediate assistance of RM1,000 each to 20 affected families and RM500 each to 43 other residents who were also affected by this natural disaster. “In addition, after discussions with Tuai Rumah Dennis, I have agreed to cover the cost of re-cementing the damaged longhouse yard and to donate a boat for use in emergencies. “It is hoped that this contribution will ease their burden, apart from assistance from the state government that they may or have received,” he said in his Facebook post today.

Nanta took the opportunity to visit the longhouse at Amang Ulu in Jalan Selirik here during the 100th Anniversary of Kapit Peace-Making Ceremony last weekend. He said that in the incident, the longhouse was flooded as early as 6am and almost all the vehicles parked in the longhouse compound were submerged under floodwater. “It also claimed the life of a retired pastor Bangau Amping, 75, who was trapped in his car due to the floods in the area,” he said.

Nanta added he had visited the longhouse in September to inspect the progress of upgrading works after Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi approved an RM1.3 million allocation last year. “I really appreciate the contribution approved by the Deputy Prime Minister because the upgrade process helped save this longhouse from suffering more serious damage due to the floods,” he said.
