Article content With the annual New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) just days away, now, a number of major automakers have announced they’re ready to reveal some important new models—and some of them we will actually be able to afford. Subaru will be in the mix with a new Outback , for example, building on three decades of hiked-up station-wagon offerings which are arguably at least partially responsible for all the crossovers we see in mall parking lots today. Speculation is running rampant the next Outback will be larger than the existing model , cutting a much more SUV-like figure which may or may not play well with the car’s traditional demographic.
Of course, given the popularity of squared-off AWD machines these days, it may not matter. Money spent by conquest customers is just as good as that splashed out by someone who’s had a Subaru for 30 years. Volkswagen seems to be planning a reveal with a large block of time reserved in the afternoon of Media Preview Day, though it is presently tight-lipped on what’s in the hopper.
Talking heads are pointing to a North American variant of a fastback-like crossover offered in overseas markets, suggesting a new model intended to slot in above the Tiguan but below the Atlas may appear. A snazzy new Hyundai Palisade for the North American market is also set to drop. The brand has already shown the Korean version of its flagship three-row crossover , complete with a bluff front end and imposing styling cues.
It’s not like Hyundai needs to revamp the Palisade—sales in America were actually up over 20% in 2024, making for the model’s best year ever. Nevertheless, it is promising a machine that is “bigger, better, and goes further” than the existing Palisade. Kia is back at the show this year, readying what it describes as “two fully electric” model lines which are probably the EV3 and EV4.
Interestingly, and speaking to the affordability aspect of cars being shown this year, we also think Kia will show a five-door hatchback variant of its K4 sedan . That’s a car that starts at just $23,995 plus freight in Canada. There will be some flash, of course—after all, this is New York City.
Genesis is likely to show its X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concept cars , a pair of drop-dead gorgeous machines that first appeared at a show in Korea and seemed to be all but ready for production..
