Reports suggest that the 59-year-old is to acquire the Toffees even though John Textor is thought to have with Farhad Moshiri [ , 17 September]. Although a final decision is yet to be made by Friedkin, talkSPORT host Jordan has suggested that the Roma owner may have taken over some of the Toffees’ putting him in an integral position. Speaking on (17 September, 12:50) he said: “My understanding of Friedkin is he’s bought the debt so the reasons why certain people are no longer in the equation, maybe George Downing, maybe Andy Bell, was because the debt was overtaken by Friedkin.

“That’s my understanding, it might be wrong but I don’t think it is and that means he’s a significant player in the acquisition of this football club. “All of them are going to circle around trying to buy the club, giving Farhad Moshiri as little as possible, which is quite frankly what he deserves. “He’s turned what was once a great club into a clown college and an embarrassment because of mismanagement.

Not because he is incapable but because he has no knowledge of the industry he’s in. “You’re in a situation where Everton needs to be acquired. If you’re Moshiri, you want to create as many opportunities to have competitive tension in the conversation as you can.

“If you’re Friedkin, you have an enormous amount of money and now potentially have some of the debt so want to preserve your position on the debt and may have to restructure and re-engineer it.” While it is unclear whether Jordan’s assessment of the situation is clear, it is obvious that Friedkin is now an integral piece of this hard-to-put-together jigsaw at Goodison Park. Whether or not that means he will ultimately be the man to take over from Moshiri on the blue half of Merseyside remains unclear, however, it does seem as though he is in as good a position as anyone else in the running.

Having financially supported the Blues during his period of exclusivity, there was always a chance that Freidkin to either acquire the club or try and reach a new agreement. That hasn’t happened quite yet, but as Jordan suggests, he is a significant player in this game. If he does decide to make an offer to rival Textor’s proposal, it will be interesting to see who Moshiri looks to deal with.
