A council tenant says she is "at the end of my tether" after suffering problems with damp and mould at her bungalow in Huddersfield. Lisa Agley, 48, says her property in Broomroyd, Longwood , has suffered from 'significant damp' for five years which she says has adversely affected her mental and physical health. Lisa says that mould has ruined some of her clothes and handbags and says she is unable to use her wardrobe.
"I have made numerous reports in relation to the damp, with different damp and mould specialists visiting with no successful changes made," she said. She says tests inside her bungalow revealed higher than normal humidity in all the rooms, adding: "Some of the health issues reported to my GP are asthma, dry eye, sinus infections and numerous flare ups of my fibromyalgia. I also have breathing difficulties.
"Over the past five years I have had my belongings damaged by the damp as well. At times I have been at the end of my tether, and felt as if I've been dismissed and ignored. As you can imagine this has had a detrimental impact on my emotional wellbeing.
" Lisa, formerly of Todmorden, said the local authority, Kirklees Council , provided her with a dehumidifier in 2020 but she says it was far too noisy and sounded like a 'jet engine'. She told YorkshireLive that she has repeatedly complained to the local authority but said that the issue had not been resolved. "I can only fight so long," she said.
"I can't cope with it. I am at the end of my tether. I feel like I am going round in circles.
"They have not resolved the problem - there is still damp. All my handbags went mouldy. I have started buying cheap stuff now.
I can't put stuff in the wardrobe as it goes mouldy. I have thrown away loads of clothes." In response, a Kirklees Council spokesperson said: "Supporting our tenants with damp, mould and condensation is one of our top priorities as a council, particularly as we're approaching the colder winter months.
"We've done a huge amount of work recently in terms of our processes for dealing with issues like this. Since this particular tenant contacted us about the previously unresolved issue last week, we've been in constant contact with her, and an in-person visit has been scheduled. "Where issues around damp and mould arise in our council homes, we now always aim to find the cause straight away and resolve the issue from the very first report.
