Vice President Kamala Harris officially conceded the presidential race Wednesday evening at her alma mater, Howard University, where her watch party was held the night before. Harris said she called former President Donald Trump during Wednesday afternoon to congratulate him on his victory in the 2024 election, which was called by most outlets early that morning. The vice president encouraged her supporters, as they experience a “range of emotions,” to accept the results of the election but continue their “fight” in the spirit of the campaign.

My allegiance to all three is why I am here to say, while I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign: The fight for freedom, for opportunity, and for fairness and the dignity of all people,” the vice president said. My heart is full today—full of gratitude for the trust you have placed in me, full of love for our country, and full of resolve.

— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) November 6, 2024 As Harris’ path to victory began to narrow late into Tuesday night, the Harris campaign sent an internal email instructing its staff to go home and get some rest. At the time of the email, two swing states, North Carolina and Georgia, were called for Trump. “Those of you who were around in 2020 know this well: It takes time for all the votes to be counted — and all the votes will be counted.

That’s how our system works. What we do know is this race is not going to come into focus until the early morning hours,” campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote, outlining a potential path to victory at the time. “This is what we’ve been built for, so let’s finish up what we have in front of us tonight, get some sleep, and get ready to close out strong tomorrow.

” Later in the night, Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond told an already thinning crowd that the vice president wouldn’t be attending her watch party but that she would address them the next day. Shortly after, Fox News called Pennsylvania for Trump, crushing Harris’ chance to victory through the “Blue Wall.” “This was a movement like nobody’s ever seen before and, frankly, this was, I believe, the greatest political movement of all time,” Trump said , addressing his supporters shortly after he was being projected as the winner of the presidential election.

“There’s never been anything like this in this country, and maybe the world, and now it’s going to reach a new level of importance because we’re going to help our country heal.” Email from Jen O’Malley Dillon sent out just now to all hands on Harris campaign: “get some sleep, and get ready to close out strong tomorrow.” pic.
