An irate mum-of-five grabbed a wheel wrench from her car boot and attacked a woman after claiming she had parked too close to her vehicle.Chantel Proud had nipped out to get some lunch for her children when she saw red during an altercation at an Aldi car park in Swanley.Chantel Proud pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and inflicting grievous bodily harm without intentMagistrates heard the victim, Natalie Jessop parked her car near Proud in St Mary’s Road.An incensed Proud, 40, not only grabbed a wrench but then followed Ms Jessop 80 metres across the car park and struck her with the weapon in front of her young daughter.The attack, which left the victim with a split lip, resulted in the two women wrestling each other as Ms Jessop tried to protect and shield her daughter from her attacker and during the fracas, Proud also bit the woman’s finger.She was later charged with possessing an offensive weapon and inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.Proud admitted both when she appeared in court in January when an all-options pre-sentencing report was ordered to be completed on her.The incident unfolded at a supermarket car park in St Mary's Road, Swanley. Photo: GoogleProud, of Hinksey Path, Abbey Wood, returned to Medway Magistrates’ Court last Thursday (March 27), to hear her fateMagistrates heard the incident happened at a supermarket car park in St Mary’s Road on the morning of December 7, 2023 where Proud claimed Ms Jessop had racially abused her at the scene.Lucie Fish, prosecuting, said: “It was 10am and in a car park in Swanley and the victim parked next to a [Škoda] Fabia and then a woman pointed at her and became angry and said she had parked too close to her vehicle.“The victim got out of her vehicle and said to her if she had a problem she should straighten her (own) car up and then the defendant stood in front of Ms Jessop.”As Miss Jessop walked away, the court heard Proud then went to the boot of her car, grabbed the wheel wrench from inside and followed the victim and her daughter across the car park.The prosecutor added: “She followed the victim 80 metres across the car park and she had the metal wheel brace and then stood in front of her face and then split her lip with it.“The victim tried to get her daughter away, but Ms Proud continued to fight and bit her finger in the process.”Chantel Proud was sentenced at Medway Magistrates' Court. Stock pictureMagistrates were then shown footage which showed the attack which had been captured on CCTV at the site.Ms Fish also told magistrates Ms Jessop had written a victim impact statement which said it was awful the attack happened in front of her daughter and that she’d had to pull her finger out of Proud’s mouth to stop her biting her more.Later she had to have a stitch in the wound, take antibiotics and have a jab to prevent infection.Shila Keshvari, defending, said her client was “horrified” and ashamed over the incident, but claimed Ms Jessop called her client a “black b****”.Ms Keshvari added: “Both (women) behaved badly, she called her a black b**** in the presence of a child.“She has deep remorse and there was no excuse for her behaviour.”At this point during the hearing, Proud started crying in the dock.It was a one-off incident and she feels terrible and horrified that it happened in front of a young child...Ms Keshvari continued: “She’s a single mother of five and she just went to get some lunch for her children and the rest followed.“She’s never been in trouble before and came out of an abusive relationship, but has a clean record and is a good mother and is the primary carer for her children.“It was a one-off incident and she feels terrible and horrified that it happened in front of a young child and she’s also horrified to be in court.“She will not breach any court order, she’s a respectful lady.”Magistrates told Proud the offences had passed the custody threshold but they were prepared to suspend her sentence.They jailed her for four months but suspended the term for 12 months.Proud was ordered to attend 20 rehabilitation sessions and complete 200 hours of unpaid work which will have some requirements to help with any mental health issues.She was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £154 and £85 court costs.Proud will pay what she owes the court at a rate of £20 a month as she’s claiming benefits.
