Mumbai’s vibrant Holi celebrations were met with an equally robust traffic crackdown by the city's police and traffic department. Over the two days of Holika Dahan and Holi (March 13 and 14), a special drive saw 17,495 challans issued for various traffic violations, leading to a total fine collection of Rs 1.79 crore.
The Mumbai Police launched a strategic campaign to ensure road safety during the festive period. Police checkpoints were set up across major roads, highways, and busy spots in the city, targeting key violations such as drunk driving, speeding, and more. The department had previously shared a list of DOs and DON'Ts, along with an advisory under the Maharashtra Police Act, warning that offenders would face strict penalties.
Violations at a Glance During the two-day campaign, the following violations were recorded: - Riding without a helmet: 4,949 cases - Drunk driving: 183 cases - Wrong-side driving: 33 challans - Driving on one-way streets: 992 cases - Triple-seat riding: 425 cases - Jumping signals: 1,942 cases - Driving without a licence: 826 people booked The crackdown aimed to hold motorists accountable for reckless behaviour and ensure safer roads during the celebrations. Holi's Bitter-Sweet Moments While Holi brought joy and colours to Mumbai, it was also unfortunate for some revellers who sustained injuries. Civic-run hospitals in the city treated several individuals during the festival, with four patients requiring hospital admission.
Two were admitted to Lokmanya Tilak Hospital in Sion, while the other two were treated at Nair Hospital in South Mumbai. Many others were treated in outpatient departments and later discharged.
