MELAKA: A 42-year-old NGO representative has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of soliciting and accepting bribes from a businessman to secure him the honorary title of "Datuk Seri". The suspect, a mother of four and a former reporter with a state-owned media outlet, is believed to have deceived the victim into paying RM48,000 so that he would be conferred the title during a Melaka state investiture ceremony last year. A Melaka MACC source said graft busters had detected multiple questionable deposits into the suspect's account from 2022 to last year.

The suspect was detained at 3.45pm on Wednesday (Oct 9) when she was summoned to Melaka MACC headquarters to help with investigations under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. She was then produced in court in Ayer Keroh here on Thursday (Oct 10), where Magistrate Nor Syaliati Mohd Sobri issued a remand order until Monday (Oct 14).

Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest..
