It’s been more than a decade since they were in the same league, but the Boerne High boys basketball team renewed their district rivalry with Alamo Heights Tuesday when the Mules came to Boerne for a visit. BHS was hoping to hand Alamo Heights its first district loss, but the Mules held off a late charge by the Greyhounds and won the contest, 53-44. Boerne is 1-3 in district and slips to 10-6 overall, while the Mules stay unbeaten in 26-5A at 3-0.
The Hounds are off for more than a week and won’t return to the court until Dec. 27-28 for the Boerne ISD Holiday Tournament. BHS fell behind early and trailed at the end of the first quarter, 15-8, with all 8 of Boerne’s points coming from Nic Hernandez with a pair of 3-pointers and a 2-point bucket.
The Hounds shot it better in the second and knocked in 14 to outscore the Mules, 14-11, and BHS trailed at the break, 26-22. The teams traded buckets in the third quarter but the Mules won the period by a point, 12-11, and bumped its lead to five points at 38-33 heading into the fourth quarter. It was back and forth in that final stanza as well and a 3-pointer by the Greyhounds cut it to 5 points at 45-40 with 2:41 left, but the Mules converted a threepoint play with a bucket and a free throw and it was back to 8 points at 48-40 with two minutes on the clock.
Boerne sliced the lead to six points at 48-42 but that’s as close as they would get to catching AH down the stretch. The Hounds started to foul to stop the clock and the Mules went to the line 15 times in the quarter, and didn’t shoot it great but they made enough – 8 for 15 – to keep Boerne at bay and get the 9-point win. BHS coach Kimble McHone has added four football players to the team now that their season is over and they are Will Traylor, Hank Hendrix, Ben Bays and Hutson Hendrix.
McHone said he’ll add those four into the mix and hopes it all meshes together sooner than later. Traylor chipped in with 6 points, Hank Hendrix added 4 points, Hernandez netted 14 to lead the Greyhounds, Noa Sanchez and Casen Hoegemeyer both dropped in 8, while Julien Hartman chipped in 4 points to round out the BHS scoring. Jack Brewer from Alamo Heights led all scorers with 17 points.
