Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, best known for his iconic roles as Shaktimaan and Bhishma Pitamah, recently opened up about his experiences in the Hindi film industry, sharing intriguing stories about two Bollywood stalwarts—Naseeruddin Shah and Shatrughan Sinha. In a conversation on the YouTube channel Shaardulogy, Khanna reflected on his time at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and his long career, offering a glimpse into the quirks and choices of his contemporaries that shaped their on-screen personas. Naseeruddin Shah’s Beard: A Shield for Self-Consciousness Khanna recalled his days at FTII, where he was a classmate of Naseeruddin Shah, one of India’s most celebrated actors known for his work in parallel cinema and mainstream Bollywood.
Khanna said, “He once told me, ‘Mukesh, what are the people in Bollywood doing? Running behind trees, showing birds.’ That day, I predicted, ‘When he joins mainstream cinema, he will have a hard time.’ Later, he did Hero Hiralal, where he did all the dancing.
” Khanna further added, “He is a great actor, he used to keep his beard because he believed he had a small chin. Yet, he shaved it all for the film. If it was anybody else, their performance wouldn’t have been as great as Naseeruddin’s, because they would have always been unsatisfied with the role and going against their idea of dancing and singing behind the trees.
” Khanna also spoke about his friend and frequent collaborator Shatrughan Sinha, the charismatic star of 1970s and 1980s Bollywood known for his booming dialogue delivery and the catchphrase “Khamosh!” He dropped a surprising revelation: Sinha, he claimed, used a “fake voice” throughout his career to project authority and create an intimidating presence. According to Khanna, Sinha’s natural voice was heard only in his 1974 film Dost , after which he deliberately altered his tone to suit his larger-than-life image.
