Jamie Duxbury, from Blackburn, was more than twice the legal alcohol limit when he crashed his Ford Kuga into the side of a Harley Davidson motorcycle being ridden by Steven Howarth on September 8 last year. The crash, which happened close to Junction 5 of the motorway near Blackburn, left Mr Howarth needing urgent medical attention to stem the bleeding on a large tear in his leg. After being taken to Salford Royal Infirmary and then onto Manchester Royal Infirmary, Mr Howarth's leg could not be saved and was amputated the following day.
Jamie Duxbury (Image: Lancashire Police) Duxbury, 33, was said to have had an argument with his partner prior to setting off in his car, and the court heard he performed a dangerous manoeuvre which saw him swerve the car from the outside lane across the carriageway. A lorry driver who witnessed the incident, Paul Gee, stopped his vehicle in the carriageway just a short distance from where Mr Howarth lay injured in the middle lane. Mr Howarth's injuries affected his work as a shoe designer and his hobbies of riding his motorcycle and playing golf. Preston Crown Court (Image: Archive) He initially had no plans to retire but feels this may now be inevitable. It was determined there were no pre-existing defects with either of the vehicles, there was nothing Mr Howarth could have done to avoid the crash, and there was no reason found for Duxbury to swerve in the way he did.
Duxbury, of Ivy Street, was jailed for 27 months at Preston Crown Court on Monday, December 9. He was also banned from driving for two years..
