It was a decent start for Mufasa: The Lion King in India as Rs. 8 crores* came in. Not many films have taken this kind of an opening in 2024 and considering the fact that it’s an animation movie and still registered such numbers, it’s a relief indeed.
It also goes on to show that Pushpa 2: The Rule is not the only film that will continue playing in this season and audiences are in mood to check out something else as well. Yes, the film was expected to take a comfortable double digit start and, in fact, before the release of Pushpa 2 , it was also being pegged as something that will comfortably go past the Rs. 15 crores mark on its opening day.
After all, The Lion King (2019) had opened at Rs. 11.06 crores in pre-pandemic times and hence this prequel was expected to go or up over that, especially since it was a successful film.
However, with Pushpa 2 continuing to be the leading running across board even in the third week, it’s still good enough that Mufasa has managed to keep its head high and was the second best. The reports for the film are just about decent to good though, which means it will not break into something bigger. However, on the flip side, this is a festive time now due to an extended holiday season, which means a lifetime of around Rs.
80-90 crores is still on the cards. *Estimates. Final numbers awaited Note: All collections as per various box office sources.
