MTN Nigeria Communications PLC (MTN Nigeria) has officially renewed its spectrum lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Limited (NTEL) following approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This renewal extends a partnership first established in 2023, reinforcing MTN Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing network coverage and improving user experience across the country. The renewed agreement includes a two-year extension, effective May 1, 2025, for leasing NTEL’s 5 MHz Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) in the 900 MHz band and 10 MHz FDD in the 1800 MHz band.

This coverage will extend across 19 states, while a one-year lease expansion, beginning January 1, 2025, will cover the remaining 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The agreement will bolster MTN Nigeria’s 3G and 4G services, enhancing network capacity and coverage in response to increasing data demand. This strategic move aims to improve the quality and reliability of the network for users nationwide.

Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, expressed his satisfaction with the renewal: “We are pleased with the renewal of the spectrum lease agreement with NTEL, which now includes coverage for all states, including the FCT. This agreement strengthens our ability to improve the user experience and expand connectivity across the nation.” Toriola further emphasized that the deal positions MTN Nigeria to capitalize on rising data demand while improving overall service delivery to customers.

In the second quarter of 2023, MTN Nigeria entered into the initial spectrum lease agreement with NTEL, securing connectivity for 19 states with an investment of $5.5 million, covering taxes, regulatory fees, and auxiliary charges. Additionally, in September 2023, MTN Nigeria acquired a 2.

6 GHz spectrum, also approved by the NCC, to further enhance network performance and expand capacity. These strategic investments underline MTN Nigeria’s dedication to providing faster, more reliable services while contributing to the country’s digital transformation and inclusion. As the lease agreement extends into 2025, MTN Nigeria remains focused on its mission to deliver innovative solutions and exceptional service to customers across Nigeria.
