MTN South Africa has unveiled its own-brand 5G smartphone, the MTN Icon 5G, aimed at accelerating the transition from older 2G and 3G devices to more modern technology. 6-inch touchscreen, a 5,000mAh battery, a 50-megapixel rear camera, and 128GB of storage. To make the device even more accessible, MTN is offering a 36-month contract plan for R219 per month, which includes 1GB of data and 50 minutes of call time. Prepaid customers can also purchase the device with a one-time data bundle of 21GB.



Thando Gabela, Devices GM at MTN South Africa, emphasized the importance of providing affordable access to 5G technology. “The launch of this affordable 5G smartphone is an essential step in MTN’s strategy to make next-generation connectivity available to a broader base of customers,” Gabela said. The MTN Icon 5G is competitively priced compared to similar devices from other brands, such as the Hisense H50S 5G and Nokia G42.

This move by MTN is expected to drive the adoption of 5G technology in South Africa and empower more consumers to enjoy the benefits of faster internet speeds and improved connectivity..
